Pranayama breathwork

Our energy resides on our breath, in yogic terms it’s actually our life force energy, our ‘prana’. We have the ability to influence our breath and move this energy through our body initiating balance and nervous system regulation to our every day.

Imagine that, a resource that we have had all along, available to us at any time.

Pranayama, (prana-breath/life force), ayama - extension) breath work is a gentle and safe practice of conscious breath.

Why its helpful

We have all felt the effects of a stressful situation where the sympathetic nervous system (‘fight or flight’) response is activated in the event of a perceived threat as the hearts start to beat faster, sweat increases, the breath is fast and shallow and all of our attention is drawn to the threat. Here the stress hormones are released, cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenaline. And this is great if there is a real threat, we will be ready to run and get out of there. But if we find ourselves too often in this state it’s exhausting and an unnecessary stress on our mind and body.

We want to have the ability to create a safe space for our body to return to a parasympathetic nervous system response, our ‘rest and digest’ response. Here we are calm, in a relaxed state giving the body the opportunity to rejuvenate and we have the ability to think clearly. In this state all the feel good hormones are released, oxytocin, melatonin, serotonin and dopamine.

The ability to move from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and digest’ helps us to regulate and can be achieved through breathwork.

What’s involved?

In a breathwork session we experience a range of tailored breath work patterns to either bring you to a state of calm or bring more energy to your body depending on the desired outcome.

You may be lying down or seated, which ever is comfortable for you, supported by props such as a bolster, pillow, blanket and eye mask and gently guided through the practice.

Sessions can be 30-60 minutes and always include time for you to settle into your new found energy with mediation to finish.

This practice can be experienced as 1 on 1 , in class or corporate setting.
